The topic of fake spoon jewelry arises every so often and I am usually prompted to write something about it to educate the consumer. The difference between real spoon jewelry, jewelry that is made from flatware and fake spoon jewelry, jewelry that is copied from popular patterns is easy to determine with an understanding of the process involved in making authentic spoon jewelry.
Authentic spoon jewelry is actually made from antique flatware. Parts of the flatware are removed and then worked into a piece of jewelry. It is important to know that some jewelry that is sold as spoon jewelry is actually a mass produced copy of a single piece of spoon jewelry. The designer makes one and then has someone else mass produce copies to be sold. This approach to spoon jewelry goes against the very spirit of the craft. Many people who purchase spoon jewelry do so with the intent of purchasing something that is recycled or repurposed from something that already exists. The motivation of these consumers is to reduce their environmental impact by reusing. Some of the jewelry that is mass produced is even produced in the USA and resembles spoon jewelry but each piece is not made from actual flatware.Consumers should be aware that this exists and may want to ask questions like “Is this actually a spoon handle or a fork handle?”, “Where do you get all of your flatware?”, “Do you actually make this yourself?”, “Why are your prices so high?”, "Are these cast reproductions?" or “What metal is used to make your jewelry?”. The answers to the aforementioned questions should help you in determining whether or not the jewelry that you are looking at is Real Spoon Jewelry or fake spoon jewelry.
